To mark World IBD Day on 19 May 2025, a range of events and activities took place across Japan under the banner of “IBD Awareness Day”, which has been officially recognised since 2013.
Since its designation, numerous organisations have organised awareness-raising initiatives aimed at eliminating the challenges that people living with IBD face in everyday situations such as schooling, employment, and working life — challenges often made worse by the low level of public understanding about the disease.
Iconic landmarks across Japan were illuminated in purple in solidarity with people living with IBD. These included Himeji Castle, Kokura Castle, Kumamoto Castle, Osaka Castle, Komine Castle, the Tsuzumimon Gate at Kanazawa Station, and Saitama Stadium.
A variety of engaging events took place to deepen public understanding and support for people with IBD.
